Company Needs & Goals:

Owens & Minor, a Richmond-based Fortune 500 global healthcare solutions company, had plans to consolidate its client and engagement efforts into one facility by 2017. The company was interested in an urban setting that would appeal to educated talent. They needed space for 500 client engagement teammates – 200 currently and 300 future positions. In February of 2017, Owen & Minor announced Richmond, Va. was the ideal location for its Client Engagement Center.

Partnership Involvement:

The Greater Richmond Partnership (GRP) was contacted in May of 2016 by Hickey & Associates, a site selection firm with offices throughout the world, to compete in the new Owens & Minor site selection. Since Owens & Minor already had operations in Greater Richmond, it was imperative to demonstrate the region’s opportunities for continued growth.

GRP promoted Richmond on a competitive basis with the other locations under consideration, which included Nashville, Tenn., and Salt Lake City, Utah. It encouraged the company, already familiar with the region, to tour the area and meet with other corporate companies in the area to gain a new perspective on the city.

Why Owens & Minor Chose Greater Richmond:

Owens & Minor originated in Hanover, Va., in 1882, and since then the company has established a 135-year history in the region. The company had 200 client engagement employees in the area prior to its expansion plans. The city’s proximity to the company’s Hanover headquarters was a positive factor, as were the talented workforce from the local universities. Downtown Richmond was able to provide 90,000 square feet of premier office spaces for the new center.

A $1.5 million grant from the Commonwealth Opportunity Fund was approved to assist the company, which was also eligible for the Virginia Enterprise Zone Program. The Virginia Jobs Investment Program was prepared to assist Owens & Minor in training new employees.
