Every year Site Selection Magazine surveys leading consultants to understand where companies are most likely to land their next major projects. The newest insights confirm a trend Greater Richmond knows well: when businesses look for a place to grow they continue to choose the Southern U.S. The survey, which ranked the region #5 for corporate headquarters, reinforces Greater Richmond’s strengths. The region shows up in the metrics that matter most to decision makers: workforce quality, business climate and long-term operating value (including 12 Fortune 1000 headquartered companies).
Across responses, Southern metros continue to dominate shortlists for corporate headquarters. Greater Richmond once again rises in the top tier of contenders for new HQ locations, standing alongside cities such as Houston, Nashville and Tampa. This aligns with a broader narrative that companies want communities offering strong talent pipelines, friendly state/local tax policy, competitive operating and living costs as well as a great quality of life.
Virginia itself holds a steady position among the nation’s strongest business climates. The state ranks in the top five for overall competitiveness thanks to its tax environment, workforce/training and quality of life factors that consistently attract both domestic and international investment.

Last year’s survey showed that 78 percent of respondents say proximity to innovation or technology hubs is an important factor in their evaluations, and Richmond’s growing tech presence continues to help the region stand out.
As the current survey notes, companies want to be where they can thrive, hire well and operate with confidence. For many firms, that means choosing places that offer both economic advantages and an environment where people genuinely can afford and enjoy living.
