Greater Richmond is made for an active lifestyle. The region is full of trails and itโ€™s not uncommon to see cyclists enjoying a morning trek on the regionโ€™s bike lanes or joggers catching a few kilometers during their lunch break.

Richmondโ€™s climate is classified as modified continental and there are four distinct seasons, allowing warm summers and generally mild winters. So, if you like having a year-round race schedule then youโ€™ve found the right place to start your journey.

Outdoors

Greater Richmond features acres of outdoor space starting with James River Park, which was named among โ€˜best river parks in U.S.,โ€™ and offers 550 acres of shoreline and islands. Richmond offers the only Class I-IV urban whitewater rafting and kayaking options in the nation. Pocahontas State Park boasts 7,700 acres of park and forest land. And if thatโ€™s not enough, the area also offers an additional 100 local parks and 6,500 acres of designated park land.

Going the distance

Thousands of runners stomp on our historic cobblestone streets during the Monument Avenue 10k and Dragon Boat racers skim the same water as Chief Powhatan. If youโ€™re seeking competition โ€“ either against yourself or others — Greater Richmond has it.

2015 UCI Road World Championships

Two major multimodal trails entice cyclists, runners and urban hikers: the Virginia Capital Trail which spans to Williamsburg, Va., and the 43-mile Fall Line trail which runs north-and-south across the metro area.

Other highlights include:

  • The Richmond Marathon and Monument Avenue 10K attracts speedsters from throughout the Eastern Seaborne.
  • The area was chosen as the location for the 2014 USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals and 2015 UCI Championships.
  • The SwimRVA facility is the proud home to an indoor 50 meter competition pool which was used in the 2008 Olympic trials where nine World records and 21 American records were broken.
