University of Richmond gets $150m gift

October 1, 2026

Last week, UR leaders announced the $150 million gift to kick off the public phase of the school's latest fundraising campaign.

U of R has received a $150 million commitment, believed to be the largest nominal donation ever received by a Virginia college.

The gift, from an anonymous donor, will be used in a number of ways, including making the university more affordable for students. UR estimates the total cost of attendance for undergraduates this year at roughly $92,000, before scholarships and financial aid are applied.

UR is one of a handful of Virginia colleges to receive a pledge of $100 million or more. In 2019, the University of Virginia received a $120 million gift from a local foundation to start a school of data science. In 2022, Virginia Commonwealth University got $104 million from the Barbara Brunckhorst Foundation to launch the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health. The foundation was started by Frank Brunckhorst, who founded the deli meat company Boar’s Head. Frank and Jane Batten gave $100 million each to the College of William & Mary and UVa.
