$51B bank to get its place on the Richmond skyline

September 25, 2026

FNB new building

A new name will soon be added to the downtown Richmond skyline.

First National Bank, a $51 billion institution headquartered in Pittsburgh, recently inked a lease to open a branch on the ground floor of Altitude on Main, the apartment conversion of the former Wytestone Plaza office building that’s nearing completion at 801 E. Main St.

FNB confirmed that the deal will put its name on signage atop the 17-story tower, a highly visible move that marks the latest step in its Richmond-area expansion plan that began three years ago.

It would be FNB’s first location downtown and third in the region, adding to its existing branches in Willow Lawn and Short Pump. It also has another in the works in Chesterfield’s Westchester Commons.

FNB said the new downtown space, which was previously a Wells Fargo location that shuttered in 2017, would include branch space and administrative offices.

FNB said a move to the central business district with a highly visible branch location and prominent skyline signage is a setup it has employed in some of the other markets it operates in.

“This model has proven very successful in multiple markets for FNB, including in Cleveland, Baltimore (where we have more than tripled in size since opening our regional HQ) and Pittsburgh (more than doubled),” a bank spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The bank would not comment on exactly how much space it will occupy in the Main Street building, though a Thalhimer marketing flyer lists the former Wells Fargo storefront at around 4,900 square feet.
