Small Business Incubators

80amps is a small business incubator that offers market analysis, human resource assistance, and financial and legal assistance services. 80Amps recently formed a partnership with the Martin Agency, who in turn helps mentor incubator participants.

1717 Innovation Center is a startup hub developed by Capital One as part of the company’s Future Edge program, a campaign to invest $150 million on community grants aiding small business development. The first three stories of the former tobacco warehouse is home to startup incubator Startup Virginia and can fit up to 50 startups. Members have access to mentorship, investors, and events.

BizWorks Enterprise Center is a non-profit small business incubator with 50,000 square feet of office, manufacturing, warehouse, and storage space.  Tenants share administrative services, business machines, and common areas, including a conference room and resource center. BizWorks also can provide business counseling, training courses, and general business advisory services.

Dominion Energy Innovation Center is located in the Town of Ashland in Hanover County, Virginia. This STEM tech startup and co-working space focuses on growing seed and early stage technology companies in the green and clean technology sectors. Prospective entrepreneurs will have access to an array of facilities and business support services, including: access to business and technology experts from Dominion; expert advice from a business advisory board; assistance with strategy development and business planning; access to discounted professional services; and introductions to sources of grant and investment capital.

Indie Lab RVA is a scientific incubator start-up founded by two VCU students in order to equip and encourage scientific discovery. Indie Lab uses a membership program to supply scientists with the tools necessary to perform safe and reliable experiments. Their goal is to provide everyone the opportunity to know, explore, and practice science.

Lighthouse Labs is an accelerator for start-ups, helping high-growth start-ups get off the ground through advice, mentorship, funding, collaboration, and office space.

Piascik Passport International Incubator is a unique concept that helps international companies smoothly and quickly establish a United States entity for doing business in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This program is also ideal for companies that already have a U.S. business entity established but are looking to relocate their employees into the United States. With this program, a team of experts is available to assist in every manner, so that all clients need to do is plug in their computers and go to work developing their business.

RVA Works is a non-profit small business incubator owned by the City of Richmond Industrial Development Authority. Rents are below market rate and space is available monthly for one to three years. A large room on the first floor has been converted into a free co-working space where entrepreneurs can work during normal business hours.

TechHatch educates teens in technology and entrepreneurship through hands-on mentorship and experiential learning. It provides a free 8-week summer program for local high school students that takes them from the generation of their idea to the creation of their own technology product.

VA Bio+Tech Park is located on 34 acres adjacent to the Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in downtown Richmond. The park is home to a unique mix of more than 58 bioscience companies, research institutes, and major state and national medical laboratories and organizations. The Park includes a technology incubator with more than 27,000 square feet of laboratory, office, meeting, and support space.

Co-Working Spaces

Balance Space is a shared space office catering to working parents located in Henrico County. This co-working facility offers onsite child care, a conference room, kitchen, and a podcast production room. In addition to this, there is a playroom and classroom where schoolchildren can focus on their homework. There’s also a nursing lounge for breastfeeding mothers.

The Broad is a co-working space and community center for women located in Richmond’s Arts District.

Build RVA is a community maker-space and product incubator providing access to tools such as lasers, computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling, and CNC routing; resources; and knowledge for entrepreneurs, creators, and tinkerers.

Business Owners Institute Resource Center opened a 4,000-square foot office in July 2017. It is an educational institute that provides high quality education and training for small business owners and their teams through structured programs and interactive workshops as well as online tools, resources, and support.

The Eastern Land Collective is a creatively led, collaborative workspace that creates brands, products, art, platforms and objects for clients, audiences and ourselves. Each studio member has 24/7 access to the workspace, a personal work area, guaranteed parking spot, internet access, use of wireless laser printer/scanner, oversized work tables, kitchenette and lounge. The studio also offers a rotation of local coffee, roof deck, use of surrounding green space w/ wifi, discounted memberships to an in-house yoga studio and access to warehouse storage. It holds regular events, artist showings, speakers and seminars based on interests and influences of its members.

Gather is a co-working space with three locations in the Richmond Region. Its features include professional office space, conference rooms, internet, a full-size copier/printer/scanner/fax machine, video-conferencing equipment, storage units, a workout facility, kitchen/café, and more. Rent a dedicated desk, state-of-the-art conference rooms, private offices, or simply co-work.

The Highpoint is a collaborative workspace for creative industry professionals that opened in 2018. The building features a full commercial kitchen, open event space, a shared classroom and a soundproof music room.

Kitchen Thyme provides commercial kitchen space for rent by the hour. Kitchen Thyme was created with the very purpose of providing a critical opportunity to the region’s culinary community with the first and only licensed incubator kitchen in Richmond offering commercial kitchen spaces for rent to aspiring entrepreneurs, chefs, students and people by the hour, day, week or month.

Novel Coworking, a Chicago-based co-working space chain, opened a Richmond location in the fall of 2018 in Shockoe Slip. It’s the first national co-working brand to come to Richmond. The Richmond location features shared work areas, a kitchen and coffee bar, private offices of varying sizes, and conference rooms.

Pinq Inc. is a co-working space for women only that opened in the Monroe Ward neighborhood. The 3,500-square-foot facility offers three floors for co-working, private offices, a kitchen, conference room and outdoor patio. Pinq also offers its CEO Club, which is a paid service such as access to educational courses, one-on-one coaching, a virtual assistant, social media management and referrals for speaking engagements.

Venture X is a shared workspace and community for entrepreneurs, established businesses, creatives, start-ups, small businesses and Fortune 500 companies that need a professional and welcoming office space. The modern designed space has high exposed ceilings with an industrial loft design, floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor patio terrace. There is a large lounge area that hosts events for up to 100 guests, a café and kitchen.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Founder’s Corner (da Vinci Center) is a 656-square-foot space open to all undergraduate and graduate student entrepreneurs at VCU. Founder’s Corner was developed as a collaboration between VCU Innovation Gateway, VCU Career Services and University Student Commons and Activities. It is part of the da Vinci Center, which is a VCU-wide initiative to enhance the culture of entrepreneurship at VCU and to provide pathways to all students interested in launching their own companies and innovations.

Work & Friends/Harris’ Work Labs is a 3,000-square-foot co-working space with open desks, a lounge area, phone booths and other common areas.

Chesterfield County

Business Center International is a full-service office business center with over 20 years of experience servicing the local business community. City of Richmond

Iron Oak is a furniture manufacturing company that leases office space on the second floor of its building in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The space is well suited for artists and very light manufacturing, but any business that needs quality space without shared clerical support is welcome. The sizes of the spaces vary but most are suitable to comfortably accommodate one or two employees. Utilities and Wi-Fi are included in the monthly rent.

Hanover County

WorkPlace is a new 5,500-square-foot co-working space open in Mechanicsville which offers individual cubicle spaces to 500-square-foot private offices. Memberships range from a day to several months, and the space includes internet access, conference rooms, a kitchen, utilities and social events.
