Biz Buzz: Startup makes quality treats for your canine

First, an alert: If you purchase Abbella Cakes treats for your dog, brace yourself — they look so good you might find yourself stationed next to your dog’s food dish, begging for scraps.
Eileen Bible — owner of Labradoodle Abby and silver Labrador Stella — has a one-woman online (www.abbellacakes.com) startup business selling her homemade pooch treats.
She makes the treats using human-grade ingredients, she said, incorporating fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables and whole grains.
A Midlothian High School graduate with a degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University, Bible wasn’t a dog person from the start.
“When I was growing up, my dad had seven fish tanks,” she said. “Then in my 20s, I had cats, and later dogs.”
Abbella Cakes offers a variety of items for Fido, from a six-pack of blueberry muffins to granola bones.
Prices are $6 and less for most items. Some of the special-event cakes run about $20.
Bible’s treats are available through the two Holiday Barn Pet Resort locations.
She also brings her products to sell at pet-related community activities. Next on her event calendar is the Bark & Beer Fest on April 19 at Strangeways Brewing.
Bible started baking dog treats in her Chesterfield County home because she was disturbed about some of the ingredients she found in reading labels of commercial pet treats. “Some of that stuff can sit on the shelves for years,” she said.
