Markel acquires majority interest in Ga. company

Markel Ventures Inc. said late Wednesday it had acquired a majority interest in Cottrell Inc. of Gainesville, Ga., a designer and manufacturer of over-the-road automobile transport equipment.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Cottrell, founded in 1975, is privately owned and sells its equipment through a network of dealers.
Markel Ventures is the investment subsidiary of Henrico County-based specialty insurer Markel Corp. Markel Ventures makes strategic investments in businesses that operate outside of the parent company’s core insurance market.
Its investment portfolio includes companies such as AMF Bakery Systems and PartnerMD.
