Wegmans begins hiring 200 full-time employees for Midlothian store

August 12, 2015

Wegmans Food Markets is moving forward with plans to open two stores in the Richmond area next year.

The grocer said Tuesday it has begun hiring to fill 200 full-time positions for its Midlothian store, which is scheduled to open next spring.

It began construction Monday on its Short Pump store, which is scheduled to open next summer.

The Rochester, N.Y.-based company said each store will employ a total of about 550 people, including 500 who will be hired locally — 200 full-time positions, 300 part-time.

Combined, the two stores will create more than 1,000 jobs in the Richmond area, according to a company statement.

Hiring for the part-time positions at the Midlothian store will begin late this year or the beginning of 2016, store manager Jerry Shelly said.

Construction on the Wegmans — part of the Stonehenge Village shopping center on Midlothian Turnpike, about 1 mile west of Chesterfield Towne Center — began in April. The 120,000-square-foot store will include a Market Café and a restaurant and bar called The Pub by Wegmans.

Shelly said he hopes the store will open in May 2016.

The Short Pump store is part of West Broad Marketplace, a mixed-used development at 12300 W. Broad St. Hiring times there have not yet been determined.

Wegmans currently operates seven stores in Virginia, most in Northern Virginia, and plans to open a store in Charlottesville next year in addition to the two here.

The company has been on Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 17 consecutive years, and was ranked seventh this year.

Applicants can apply online at www.wegmans.com or call (877) 934-6267 for more information.
